India's top-order batter Shubman Gill was adjudged by the ICC as the Men's Player of the Month for January 2023 for his recent performances across formats.
Gill was nominated, alongside his teammate Mohammad Siraj and New Zealand's Devon Conway, for the award after his outstanding performance in January's white-ball cricket.
Gill was rewarded with his first T20I cap during the three-match home series against Sri Lanka in 2022 after a strong ODI season in 2022 and a successful Test tour of Bangladesh in December, where he recorded his first hundred.
Then, in three ODI innings against the island nation, he amassed 207 runs, scoring 70 and 116 runs in the first and third matches, respectively.
The 23-year-old's most notable performance came in the opening ODI of a three-match series against New Zealand, where he scored 208 off 149 to help India post a winning score of 349-8 in a nail-biting thriller in Hyderabad.
With the magnificent innings, he joined Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma (twice), and Ishan Kishan as the fifth Indian to score an ODI double-hundred.
In addition, Gill's total of 360 against the Kiwis equalled Babar Azam's record against the West Indies in 2016–17 as the joint-highest ever for anyone in a three-match bilateral ODI series.
After failing to perform in the first two T20Is against the Black Caps, Gill was sensational in the third match as he smashed 126* off just 63 deliveries in Ahmedabad.
With the century, he joined Tendulkar, Rohit, Suresh Raina, and Virat Kohli as the fifth Indian batters to score a ton in each of the three international formats.
